Abstract = {For Durkheim is a timely and original contribution to the
debate about Durkheim at a time when his concerns on ethics,
morality and civil religion have much relevance for our own
troubled and divided society. It includes two new essays
from Edward A. Tiryakian’s collection on the Danish
Muhammad cartoons and September 11th, providing contemporary
relevance to the debate and an analytical and interpretive
introduction indicating the ongoing importance of Durkheim
within sociology. This indispensable volume for all serious
Durkheim scholars includes English translations of papers
previously published in French for the first time, and will
be of interest to sociologists, anthropologists, social
historians and those interested in critical questions of
modernity.},

Abstract = {© Saïd Amir Arjomand and Edward A. Tiryakian 2004. 'At
last, a volume on civilization that truly reflects the
complexity of multiple civilizations. The wealth of
contributions Arjomand and Tiryakian have assembled
demonstrates the value of an old concept for understanding
the awful dilemmas confronting human kind in the global age.
Its thoroughgoing renewal here establishes this book as the
essential benchmark for future scholars of civilization' -
Martin Albrow, Founding Editor of International Sociology
and author of The Global Age - winner of the European Amalfi
Prize, 1997 'In our tension filled world, many are
heralding, and others fearing, a"clash of civilizations."
The contributors to this volume provides a healthy and
persuasive argument about why this clash need not, and
certainly should not, take place. They do so, moreover, not
by rejecting the concept of civilization, but by developing
a less primordial, homogenous, and essentialist concept of
it. An important collection that provides illumination in
this sometimes frighteningly dark time' - Jeffrey Alexander,
Professor and Chair of Sociology at Yale University 'The
concept of civilization may well replace the notions of
globalization and identity as the core component in the
vocabulary of 21st century sociology. The authors contribute
a great deal to the clarification of fashionable
controversies around the "clash of civilizations" and
"multiculturalism". They go a long way toward purging the
concept of civilization of its ideological overtones, and
they suceed admirably in turning it into powerful analytic
tool of an emerging fleld of macrosociology, known already
as civilizational analysis' - Piotr Sztompka, President,
International Sociological Association Although the concept
of 'civilization' has deep roots in the social sciences,
there is an urgent need to re-think it for contemporary
times. This book points to an exhaustion in using 'the
nation state' and 'world system' as the basic macro-units of
social analysis because they do not get to grips with the
'soft power' variable of cultural factors involved in global
aspects of development. Also, globalization requires us to
reconsider the link between civilization and a fixed or
given territory. This book focuses upon the dynamic aspect
of civilizations. Among the topics covered are: ·
Civilizational analysis and social theory · Global
civilization and local cultures · Civilizational forms ·
Rationalization and Civilization · Civilizations as zones
of prestige · Historical and comparative dimensions of
civilization · The clash of civilizations.},

Abstract = {As a sociological topic, the analysis of civilizations spans
three generations. The first is the classical period of the
later 19th century up to World War I. The second period
covers the interwar period, with contributions from Marcel
Mauss and Pitirim Sorokin. The third may be dated from the
end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Empire to
the later 1990s and attempts at formulating a "new world
Order".In the current phase, civilizational analysis has
been linked with globalization as a dynamic transnational
process, with the direction no longer being defined by "the
West", but by "multiple modernities" (Eisenstadt). In the
present condition of modernity, it is too soon to view our
situation as evolving into a set of overlapping
civilizations, or a single transformative civilization, or,
if due to some man-made earthly disaster,a breakdown of
civilization (leading to some new "Dark Ages").},

stimuli in the development of sociological theory, extending
back to the founder of sociology, Auguste Comte, trained as

may prove to be equally heuristic in conceptualizing
globalization, views as a set of processes ultimately
justifiable as providing an optimal distribution of goods

these flows and how they might be remedied is a critical
challenge for the application of constructal

framework for the emergence of scientific/intellectual
movements (SIMs), we argue that RCT rose to prominence in
sociology in conjunction with: 1) high status actors’
criticism of the previously dominant paradigm, structural
functionalism; 2) favorable structural conditions that
provided entrepreneurial access to key resources; 3)
proliferation through micromobilization contexts; and 4) the
ability of those espousing RCT for sociology to draw on
dominant cultural motifs outside of academia. The rise of
RCT in American sociology provides a case study for how
scientific/intellectual movements can find an audience in
academic contexts that are predisposed to oppose
them.},

Abstract = {While solidarity has a rich theoretical and empirical
background in Europe, as an ongoing political/cultural
accomplishment, it has had an episodic history in the United
States, but presently has gained new interest in the social
sciences and social philosophy. In this chapter we first
look at its origin in the creative phase of the French Third
Republic, where it emerged as both a social philosophy in a
political action program, and as a scientific program in
Durkheimian sociology. As will be noted, solidarity has been
for modern industrial society a democratic “third way”
between economic liberalism and militant socialism or
Marxism. Although a continuing institutionalized presence in
later phases of republican France, it reemerged into a
larger public awareness and sociological attention,
particularly in France, with the Polish trade union movement
that took on the name Solidarność in 1980.},

Abstract = {While traditional religion has been losing ground in the
public sphere in the United States, the sociology of
religion has been gaining vitality from several sources,
even beyond the many conferences held in 2012 to commemorate
Durkheim's epochal Elementary Forms of the Religious Life.
One set of empirical stimuli has been the work of Christian
Smith and the Center for the Study of Religion and Society
at the University of Notre Dame. A second stimulus is new
analytical and theoretical endeavors expanding on the
sociology of civilizations, with important contributions
from Parsons and Eisenstadt. A pinnacle of this development
is the recent cultural evolutionary thinking of Bellah
[2012], synthesizing materials from Jaspers, Eisenstadt, and
cognitive neuroscientist Merlin Donald. As a grand
narrative, it bears comparison with E. O. Wilson's and
Teilhard de Chardin's evolutionary frame. We are still
grappling with Durkheim's challenge of what are the
religious forms appropriate for our advanced modernity.

Abstract = {Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities has redrawn
understanding of the loci and agents of modern nationalism.
Whereas standard interpretations had privileged the
movements of modernity of Western nation-states, Anderson's
analysis gave priority to the role of peripheral elites in
"imagining the nation" beyond the boundaries of the everyday
world. What Anderson leaves out altogether in his seminal
study is the bearing of the religious factor in various
peripheral settings in such regions as sub-Sahara Africa and
East Asia. This article, extending Max Weber's notion of
charismatic leadership, proposes that in concrete cases of
"colonial situations" in Africa and in two East Asian
countries of weak states, religio-political figures arose
seeking a new social order that had mass appeal. Their
successes and failures should be seen as integral
comparative aspects of nationalism and modernity. © 2011

Abstract = {This essay proposes that the comparative research of
Eisenstadt made room for 'tradition' as a creative feature
of modernity, rather than as dysfunctional, as in either the
liberal or leftist model. He recognized that conflict -
often a conflict of generations-is a feature of modernity,
and that trust is also a problematic aspect of change. An
ultimate concern of Eisenstadt was to build on classical
themes of sociology and theories of social change to
develop, with colleagues, an adequate sociological
understanding of an evolving civilization of modernity.
Eisenstadt based his writings on comparative historical
research, his far-flung travels, as well as continuous
observations of the dynamics of his own Israeli society. ©

Abstract = {A given national identity may have multiple meanings rather
than an "essential" one, and it is subject to historical

in the period of modernity. The one which has most

Abstract = {At a workshop at the University of Michigan in November
2006, three generations of scholars met to discuss and
debate the study of Chinese politics and how new and diverse
sources and methods are changing the field. This volume is
the culmination of that workshop. Drawing on diverse
research experiences, we present a wide range of sources,
methods, and field strategies for the study of Chinese
politics in the new era. As political scientists, we place
our distinct methodological approaches in the framework of
the discipline and point to particular challenges or
opportunities (or both) of adaptation in the context of
contemporary China. With the main focus on methodological
concerns and the discovery of new data sources, the chapters
in this volume are also richly substantive illustrations
that demonstrate how to adapt method to context innovatively
and appropriately. Thus, this book illustrates the benefits
of the emerging cross-pollination between China studies and
the broader discipline. Three major themes emerged from our
workshop discussions: (1) how to effectively use new sources
and data collection methods, (2) how to integrate the study
of Chinese politics into the discipline of political science
to the betterment of both, and (3) how to deal with
logistical and ethical problems of doing research in a
challenging environment. In this Introduction, we discuss
these themes in the sections below in the context of the
initial workshop, the substantive chapters in this volume,
and the field more generally. As only sporadic attention has
been paid to the nuts and bolts of the study of Chinese
politics, we hope this volume will spark future debates and
other publications, conferences, and graduate training on
research design and methodology in challenging fieldwork
sites. We recognize that this volume joins an existing
ongoing debate (Baum, 2007; Harding, 1994; Heimer and
Thøgersen, 2006; Manion, 1994; Perry, 2007 and 1994b;
Shambaugh, 1993; Wank, 1998). Collectively the following
chapters illustrate that although much has changed in the
realm of studying Chinese politics, many of the fundamentals
that previous scholars learned about this endeavor still
apply. Language skills and familiarity with China strike us
as remaining core prerequisites for scholars wishing to make
sense of any given aspect of Chinese politics. Moreover,
local knowledge – that is, knowing China – is
increasingly insufficient. Each of the contributors to this
volume has also utilized a wide variety of research skills
in his or her work. These skills cover a broad set of
approaches to politics and include the use of sophisticated
quantitative techniques, the production and utilization of
survey data, the application of new technologies, searching
out and making use of previously closed archival sources,
and even conducting quasi-experiments. Although such
approaches cover many tools in the political science kit,
and are illustrative of the impressive and at times
conflicting directions in which the study of Chinese
politics is headed, all contributors to this volume have
made use of such methods with a common purpose in mind: to
amplify their ability to describe and explain key aspects of
politics in contemporary China. As such, the volume shows
the rewards of bringing together scholars with diverse
backgrounds, yet who share a collective commitment to
pushing both China studies and the discipline forward in an
inclusive and mutually beneficial manner. Thus, although the
volume focuses on mainland China almost exclusively, we
believe that the methodology and research design strategies
presented here are relevant to scholars in many other places
around the globe.},

Abstract = {The sociological assessments of multiculturalism as a
controversial theme of late modernity have been slow to
follow the initiatives of John Rex in the past ten years
(Rex 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998). Mainstream American sociology,
in its leading refereed journals, has paid scant attention
to it and to the public debates surrounding it, with a
couple of exceptions (Alba 1999; Koopmans and Statham 1999);
yet, 'ethnicity', 'race' and even 'culture', which are
interwoven in any discussion of 'multiculturalism', have
been topics of continuing interest to various American
sociological researchers. Hopefully, the present volume and
the attention given to multiculturalism in a new major
reference work (Radtke 2001) that will be a standard for the
social sciences will be a stimuli for giving this theme the
sociological focus it merits. Towards this objective, this
paper is a modest attempt to assess analytically a very
extensive and heterogeneous literature outside mainstream
sociology. In doing so, I will draw on various leads offered
by Rex and his colleagues.},

more recent conceptualizations, including the controversial

Abstract = {Parsons's training as an economist, his graduate stay at
Heidelberg, and his participation in the Henderson seminar
at Harvard provide major clues to his familiarity with
Marshall, Pareto, and Weber - three of the four figures
whose convergence forms the major theoretical achievement in
The Structure of Social Action. But what led him to
Durkheirn, since Parsons did not study or reside in France,
yet read Durkheim in the original, remains an enigma.
Without resolving the enigma, this paper argues that Parsons
had a great deal in common with Durkheim, and, equally
important, that in his mature and late periods he found in
his "revisits" of the later writings of Durkheim both
inspiration and affinity. I argue that Parsons well deserves
recognition as a major authority on Durkheim, and that both
combined offer an alternative to the contemporary version of
utilitarianism.},

Abstract = {Although its presence is manifest in all modern societies -
in politics, economics and popular culture as well as
collective memory - was has indeed been a neglected topic of
sociological research, though no discussion of modernity can
be complete without it. This article first addresses the
question of factors in both the liberal and the socialist
traditions that have led to this neglect. Attention is then
given to functions of war in the modernization process and
beyond this, to the imputed moralism of modern warfare, from
the 19th century to the present decade. Since modern war
represents the epitome of mobilization, war may be viewed
sociologically as a powerful social movement on behalf of a
moral cause. A final consideration is the complex relation
of war to violence.},

Abstract = {A meaningful interpretation of the dynamics of recent
momentous historical changes - most notably the unexpected
and surprising implosion of the Soviet empire in 1989-1990 -
may be obtained by recombining aspects of the sociology of
religion analyses of Weber and Durkheim. In particular,
their complementary notions of ‘charisma’ and
‘collective effervescence’ provide an understanding of
how social actors in coercive secular states, confronted by
a seeming monopoly of the use of physical force, are able,
in certain exceptional circumstances, to mobilise and disarm
the state. The assembling of the social or national
community is the background to Weber's discussion of
charismatic leadership and the foreground to Durkheim. The
‘velvet revolutions’ of 1989 in various countries of
Eastern Europe may be seen as manifestations of an
historical moment of ‘collective effervescence’ in which
the assembled collectivity itself, more than individual
figures, manifested the empowerment of charisma. © 1995,

Abstract = {Durkheim's doctoral dissertation can justifiably be called
sociology's first classic. Rereading it 100 years later
enables us to see major domains of the contemporary world
where its analysis remains, of actuality, heuristic or yet
to be fully appreciated: for example, its themes of anomie
as economic deregulation and corporatism as an institutional
arrangement to deal with anomie. At the same time,
Durkheim's discourse reflects its historical embeddedness,
such as his discussion of the sexual division of labor,
which needs to be reworked. A second feature of emergent
contemporary social solidarity unforeseen by Durkheim (and
the great majority of theorists of change) is what may be
termed "the return of mechanical solidarity." © 1994 Plenum

Abstract = {Since 1988 the world has witnessed unexpectedly massive
changes and reforms, including the destructuring of the
bipolar world of the Cold War era, the adoption of market
economies to replace centrally planned economies, and the
democratisation of authoritarian regimes. Essentially, this
paper argues that the turbulent transition period of this
decade is one that may be characterised as a ‘new world of
new worlds’, presenting a vast ensemble of challenges for
the sociological analysis of modernity. A historical
perspective with previous periods of transition from one
social order to the next is proposed, as well as a
discussion of salient general socio-psychological features
of the contemporary situation, such as changes in collective
identity. Finally, attention is given to a methodological
approach suitable to make sense of our world situation. ©

Abstract = {The first part of this article deals with religion in the
United States in the context of American exceptionalism. At
least since Tocqueville, observers have noted that a
distinctive national characteristic of the United States is
its religious vitality. In addition to commonly cited
aspects of religious activism, it is also argued here that
this exceptional vitality is reflected in the periodical
mass or public renewals of the religious life and, stemming
from Puritanism, in the diffusion of religious elements to
other social contexts. A second theme presented in this
article is that the three major religious
orientations—Protestantism, Catholicism, and Judaism—not
only fill an important niche as providers of social identity
but also have found in the United States an exceptional
historical setting. © 1993, SAGE PERIODICALS PRESS. All

Abstract = {An important challenge for macrosociology in the 1990s is to
account for the cluster of social movements in different
post-World War II settings, most recently those that intend
structural changes in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union.
To account for these extraordinary phenomena of historical
significance calls for a new global synchronic and
diachronic analysis. After discussing three major waves of
these movements that have in common a challenge to the
authority of the modern state, this paper proposes that
‘neo-modernisation analysis’ may be the most appropriate
macro-paradigm to relate sociology to the comparative study
of cycles of modernisation and of centres of modernity. It
is highly relevant since many regions of the world are
undergoing an important new phase of modernisation and since
there may be taking place an important shift in the
epicentre of modernity. State socialism is bankrupt in
Eastern Europe. Governments, ruling parties, of the
opposition, experts, and expert committees are desperately
searching… for a new paradigm, a new social and economic
model with which to launch these countries onto a new course
of dynamic development. (Hankiss 1990: 183). © 1991, SAGE

Abstract = {20 years after 1968 is an opportune time for a sociological
reflection on the events and the interpretations of what
"1968" means. First is that "1968" as a sociocultural and
sociopolitical setting spans more than one year, more of a
five-year stretch. Second, it was a global event involving a
conflict of generations, with a central focus being the
challenge of authority (of all sorts). Third, as the title
of this paper suggests, the question of "1968" entails why
it was not predicted in standard sociological models.
Equally, why in the radical sociological analyses of the
1960s was the political conservatism of the 1970s and 1980s
equally not predicted?},

Abstract = {This paper advocates internationalising the sociology
curriculum for both practical and theoretical reasons.
Macro-sociology must drop the parochialism of implicitly
confining itself to intra-state phenomena, based on Western
historical experience, and develop a conceptual framework
adequate to deal with the emergent transnational scene and
transnational global structures and processes of change.
Correspondingly, the sociology curriculum must be geared to
increasing the international competency of students, both
undergraduates and graduates. Doing so will attract better
undergraduates seeking careers in the international field,
and will for graduates provide training and research that
will promote the number of sociologists actually engaged in
international studies. © 1986, Sage Publications. All

Abstract = {The most prolific of contemporary sociologists, S. N.
Eisenstadt has been an immense stimulus in revitalizing the
comparative macro-sociological orientation of the
discipline. He has done this through cross-cultural studies
and through historical ones, with a fundamental concern for
understanding the whys and wherefores of social change. At
the core of this concern stands the problem of coming to
grips with modernity. Modernity does have significance if it
is treated in a structural sense, rather than only in an
individual or psychological sense. The Roman Empire and its
metropolis appear as an epicenter of modernity that lasted
for several centuries, although it underwent a "degenerative
phase" that was masked for a long while by the material
opulence of its civilization. But the Roman Empire also
became the locale for a new world religion, that of
Christianity, which in its "Western" form was to have a
profound effect on succeeding waves of modernity.},

Abstract = {The history of nationalism is a confusing one, and when this
is added to the conceptual morass surrounding
“modernization,” the difficulty of relating the two
concerns is compounded. Nationalism is rarely a central
issue in analyses of modernity and vice versa. In relating
nationalism to the question of modernity, a paramount image
of the modernization process-common to liberals, traditional
Marxists, and their hybrid offsprings-is to view the central
parameters of this process in terms of economic forces and
their morphological/ecological correlates and derivatives.
Two major figures who grappled with these problems, Marcel
Mauss and Max Weber, are better known for other writings,
yet their contributions in this context are analytically
superior to contemporary sociological writings on
nationalism and hence merit an extensive discussion. Of
particular interest is that their respective analyses
converge toward what may be viewed as a dynamic,
voluntaristic sociological perspective on the
nation.},

Abstract = {Maurice Merleau-Ponty was one of the most original and
important philosophers of the past century. Yet in many ways
the full scope of his contribution is becoming clear only
now, more than forty years after his death. His impact on
philosophy, psychology, and criticism has been enormous,
although his intellectual reputation was initially somewhat
overshadowed - first by the greater notoriety of his friend
Jean-Paul Sartre and then by structuralism and
poststructuralism in the latter half of the century. As a
result, in part due to his premature death, Merleau-Ponty's
presence in contemporary intellectual life has remained
strangely elusive. His influence has cut across disciplinary
boundaries, yet it has tended to move beneath the surface of
mainstream scholarly and popular intellectual discourse. As
a result, perhaps understandably, academic and nonacademic
readers alike have been slow to appreciate the real depth
and significance of Merleau-Ponty’s thought, which cannot
be neatly pigeonholed in familiar conceptual or historical
categories. He was a phenomenologist above all, yet he
differed in fundamental ways from the three other major
phenomenologists, Husserl, Heidegger, and Sartre. Unlike
these philosophers, Merleau-Ponty availed himself of
empirical data and theoretical insights drawn fromthe
biological and social sciences, although he was not a
psychologist, a linguist, or an anthropologist. He could
fairly be called an existentialist, although that label has
come to seem less and less informative in hindsight,
embracing as it did such a disparate array of literary and
intellectual figures.},

Abstract = {Reflecting the attention Parsons gave to religion in
relation to modernity, this paper reinterprets the
significance of the Puritan ethic in modern America. It is
first argued that a crucial feature of the Reformation was
the Calvinist collapse of the traditional separation of the
religious and mundane spheres, which makes sacralization of
the mundane as likely as secularization of the religious; a
second feature was that Puritanism stresses a sharp break
between members of the community and outsiders, legitimating
callous or harsh treatment of the latter. The paper relates
these features to two themes of importance in the
development of America imprinted by a Puritan culture:
service, which Parsons early gave attention to, and mission
Three sorts of mission are noted, beyond the initial
religious one: (a) establishing a free polity, (b)
harnessing the forces of nature via technology, (c) bringing
a pax Americana to the world as an extension of the American
covenant. © 1982 Association for the Sociology of

Abstract = {Although relegated to a minor place in his writings,
Durkheim did consider aspects of sexuality and sexual
regulations as basic features of social organization. This
paper begins with an examination of sexual anomie in
Suicide. Durkheim uncovered some unexpected data as to which
sex really benefits from the institution of marriage but did
not draw out the implications of his findings because, we
suggest, the findings were too anomalous in terms of the
bourgeois worldview of his period. Yet the notion of sexual
anomie is heuristic in approaching features of contemporary
society that involve transformations in sexual relations and
sexual identity. In addition to structural changes and
deregulations in sexual relations, attention is also given
to ideological ones, such as expressions of an ideology of
"androgyny." We conclude that the question and meaning of
sexual relations will become a central concern for the
social order of advanced modernity, and therefore should be
reconsidered as a major variable in societal change. © 1981

Abstract = {The basic hypothesis of this paper is that attitudes towards
the future are highly important for explaining the
differences between Western cultures and other cultural
systems. In the United States in particular, these attitudes
are strongly characterized by an emphasis on modernity, an
emphasis which has, however, a dual character. Either the
future is seen as a continuation of the present, and this is
the concept of progress: or the future is seen as breaking
with the present system, and this is the concept of
eschatology, or even of apocalypse. Using some empirical
illustrations, the author then describes these two principal
myths about the future. The doctrine of Progress, which
developed out of the Protestant ethic, became more and more
secular and was widespread by the 19th century. It is
however a myth that is fading as a result of the negative
effects of economic growth and also due to a certain feeling
of disillusionment among the middle classes as to their role
in such progress and their real chances of social mobility.
Recently there has been a return to apocalyptic views of the
future: charismatic movements, theories postulating an end
to growth and a possible golden age, revolutionary
movements, and even science fiction developments. This
change in the categories of future perception, this
transitional phase between two myths of modernity,
unquestionably represents a major cultural change and is
itself an indication of major changes to come in the
organization of Western societies. © 1978 Taylor & Francis

Abstract = {The existing pattern of race relations in South Africa,
characterized by authoritarian repression of nonwhites,
provides an unstable social climate. This paper examines
currently discussed alternatives and finds them wanting in
terms of their practicality. A realistic appraisal of the
global situation of South African society suggests that the
equitable partition of South Africa into two viable
autonomous states may be the optimal solution. © 1967,
