    This article is the centerpiece of the forthcoming book, Fictions and Histories: Women Film Pioneers. A discussion of the 1896 film The Cabbage Fairy, most likely produced by Alice Guy Blache at Gaumont, which raises the theoretical question of historical "firsts" and suggests an alternative to the "cinema of attractions" paradigm that has dominated film history in recent years.
