- Research Interests:
Professor Emeritus of Political Science is an Africanist who also teaches in the areas of comparative politics and international resource politics. He taught at Northwestern, Brandeis, and the University of Zambia before coming to Duke. In 1978-79 he was a Visiting Scholar at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague; in 1983 and 1985 he was a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe; in 1993 he was a Visiting Fellow at the Southern African Research Program at Yale University; in 1994 he was a Fulbright Research Scholar at the University of Cape Town and the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. He is the co-editor of Mining for Development in the Third World; Mandela, Tambo and the African National Congress, and is the author of From Protest to Hope, 1882-1934 (Volume I of From Protest to Challenge; A Documentary Survey of African Politics in South Africa), and Raising the Red Flag: The International Socialist League and the Communist Party of South Africa, 1914-1932, as well as of journal articles and book chapters dealing with African politics.
