Bio/Profile
VanSant is an MBA-trained management and organization specialist with 35 years experience as a manager and consultant with private fir and government agencies in the U.S. and overseas. He served for three years as the resident director of a national development program in Indonesia. He has published several articles and a book on international development with emphasis on issues of strategic planning, evaluation, management, and organizational performance. In recent years his consulting focused on leadership and organizational renewal for both public and non-governmental organizations.

From 1990 to 1999, VanSant directed the Research Triangle Institute’s Center for International Development, providing technical services in policy support, public finance and management, education, health, population, and environmental policy and management. Since 1978, VanSant has performed over 70 consulting assignments in 26 countries for private sector corporations, the World Bank, the Ford Foundation, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the U.N. Development Program, and non-profit organizations. In addition he has lectured or taught at seven universities on subjects related to management and international development.

Since 1999, VanSant has been a Visiting Professor at the Sanford Institute of Public Policy at Duke University (Program in International Development Policy) focusing on issues of leadership, management, and the role of non-governmental organizations.

VanSant has served on several non-profit boards including the United Way, the Chapel Hill Library Foundation, the Bald Head Island Conservancy, and the Latin America Resource Center. Currently he is president of North Carolinians against Gun Violence.
