I use a combination of primate genetic and genomic tools to connect genotype to phenotype across a variety of primates. I am very interested in the genetics of behavior. I have also begun exploring the skin microbiome across non-human and human primates to explore the evolution of microbes and hosts, and to better understand how human daily habits affect our microbial inhabitants. I hold a joint appointment between NC Central University in Durham, NC and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC where I am the Head of the Genomics & Microbiology Research Lab. In addition to research and teaching, I also engage the general Museum public and K-12 students in the science and the scientific process. As the Research Director of the newly formed Primate Genomics Initiative, I am interested in combining primate genomics with research in other disciplines. I am currently involved in a collaborative project exploring the genetic basis for the evolution of human diet. I am also collaborating on a project to create a primate SNP resource.
