    Abstract:
The first example of the cyclobutenocyclooctatetraene structural class (2) to possess stability at room temperature has been prepared by a route involving ring contraction via a Wolff rearrangement. Derivatives have been characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, X-ray crystallography, and cyclic voltammetry. All of these properties are in concert with a structure possessing a high-lying HOMO, low-lying LUMO and a carbon skeleton closer to planarity than any bicyclic cyclooctatetraene yet prepared. © 1991, American Chemical Society.
