    Abstract:
The clustering phenomena and solvation effects in polyelectrolyte solutions of poly(acrylic acid) were investigated. The small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) technique was used to observe clustering and solvation properties. Solutions of 5% PAA in d-water were measured and found to show the clustering feature similar to the PEO/d-water case. Hydrophobic chain ends effect was found to contribute to clustering in a water-soluble PEO/d-water solution and in a PAA/d-water polyelectrolyte solution. It was found that mixed solvents gave a more effective solvation of the polymer than individual solvents.
