    Abstract:
The design of an attachment for the Cary Instruments model 14 or 17 series spectrophotometers for the measurement of the polarized specular reflectance spectra of microsamples in the near uv, visible, and near ir is described. The attachment is easily interchangeable with standard sample handling accessories in the extended cell compartment of the instrument. When aligned, the apparatus focuses the beam on the sample at nominally normal incidence by means of Cassegrain optics. The reflected beam is passed by a series of mirrors to the standard Cary detector. The spectrophotometer is operated in the double beam absorbance mode. Comparison of the sample reflectance with that of a calibrated mirror measured under the same conditions allows the calculation of the absolute reflectivity of the sample, which can then be used to derive the absorptivity via a Kramers-Kronig relationship. The use of the apparatus to obtain polarized spectra of highly absorbing single crystals is discussed.
