Abstract: This note identifi es an unnoticed allusion in Pliny Epistle 9.36 to the story of Demosthenes' cave, and explicates hoW that allusion responds in specifi c terms to the passage in Quintilian (Pliny's teacher) in Which the story of the cave is told; the upshot is a reading of Pliny's letter as an allusive and dialogic text of considerable sophistication.
