The dissertation consists of three related papers on the political economy of trade policy. Much recent literature has successfully explained the persistence of trade barriers via the desires of politicians to garner support from vocal, but quite narrow, constituencies. The three papers of the dissertation examine in novel detail the process through which trade policy is determined, and how lobbyists and politicians interact across countries in different development stages and with different institutional structures.
