    Analyzes the `National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988' to answer three questions on race differences in attitudes toward education in the United States. Greater alienation experienced by blacks toward school than non-Hispanic whites; Peer penalties for academic success; Impact of family backgrounds between blacks and whites in the educational process. Winner of the Vernon Prize for best paper in Volume 16.
