Abstract:
Primary School Action for Better Health (PSABH) became the national HIV prevention curriculum of Kenya in 2007. This study examined PSABH implementation and factors associated with student risk behaviors in a rural division of Nyanza Province. Of 9 schools, 6 were implementing PSABH. Surveys were administered to 932 students (398 female) aged 9-21 years. Fifty-five percent of males and 44% of females reported a history of sexual activity. For males, self-efficacy and learning about abstinence strategies were associated with lower risk behavior; exposure to HIV education in assemblies and communication with relatives was related to higher risk. For females, condom self-efficacy was related to lower risk behavior; HIV education during pastoral instruction was associated with higher risk. Results showed low levels of implementation and few specific PSABH components related to lower risk. Results suggest programs should address implementation barriers and emphasize monitoring and evaluation to identify potentially harmful prevention strategies.
