Abstract:
Sentimentalism. in. Early. Confucian. Thought. David. B. Wong. This essay is an exploration of what Mencius (fourth century BCE) and Xunzi (fourth and third centuries BCE) in the classical Confucian tradition have to say about cultivating goodness in persons.1 One of the benefits of such an exploration is that it can help us go outside well-worn Humean and Kantian grooves of thinking about the relationship between reason on the one hand and desire and emotion on the other hand.
