Abstract:
In this article, I examine issues related to cultural memory, gender, oral history and the Gulag through comparing two very different interviews. One person became the–often military–hero of every story; the other retreated into herself. In close readings of these case studies, I suggest how these two ways of remembering and narrating model ways of remembering common to many Gulag survivors.
