    Abstract:
The scientific name of Bristly Greenbrier, a widespread species in eastern North America, has been unsettled for at least the past six decades with Smilax tamnoides and S. hispida both strongly competing for acceptance in scores of books, papers, and checklists. Neither binomial as currently employed can withstand nomenclatural scrutiny. The correct name determined in the present study is S. hispida Raf., a binomial with three years priority over S. hispida Muhl. ex Torrey.
