Research Interests for Susan Fancher

Research Interests:

A much sought after performer of new music, Dr. Susan Fancher has inspired and premiered over 100 new works for saxophone. Most recently, she has championed a new repertoire of concertos for soprano saxophone. The 2013-2014 season included the premiere of a concerto, based on Celtic themes, composed for her by David Kirkland Garner, with the Duke Wind Symphony under the direction of Verena Mösenbichler-Bryant. In April 2012, she premiered Mark Engebretson’s Concerto for soprano saxophone and orchestra in Sala São Paulo under the baton of Ligia Amadio. Her May 2013 CD release “Of Erthe and Air: Susan Fancher and friends play music of Hilary Tann” (Arizona University Records CD 5014) features a live performance from 2009 of Tann’s soprano saxophone concerto with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. Other recent concerto appearances include several performances of Michael Torke's Concerto for soprano saxophone in its new version with wind ensemble, commissioned by Susan Fancher and a consortium of wind ensembles, as well as Mark Engebretson's Duo Concertante together with saxophonist James Romain and the Drake University Wind Ensemble under the direction of Robert Meunier (released on the CD titled MOSAIC on Mark Records 50781-MCD). Susan Fancher is an active recitalist, performing frequently with pianists Inara Zandmane and Jane Hawkins, and she is soprano saxophonist of the Greensboro, NC based Red Clay Saxophone Quartet.
