P. McClain, Inter-minority Group Competition (August, 2004) (2000 data collection. The data collection has been completed and we are in the process of analyzing the data. We hope to have a paper ready for submission by the end of 2005..).
P. McClain, Inter-minority Group Political and Social Economic Competition (research in progress) (This is an extension of previous research using 1990 census and other data sources to examine the pattern of inter-minority group relations in a set of US cities. There are 98 cities that reached the 10 percent black and 10 percent Latino threshold. This is twice the number of cities in 1980. Data on Asian Americans and American Indians were also collected, when available, for the cities..).
P. McClain, American Governments (research in progress) (This project is an American government textbook to be published by Addison Wesley Longman. This text emphasizes that fact that there is no one American government, but there are thousands of American governments. It also argues that not all citizens are treated equally and equitably by government and that ascribed characteristics such as race, gender, socioeconomic class and citizenship status, among others, often results in different treatment from government. This text is being co-authored with Steven C. Tauber, University of South Florida..).
P. McClain, The Durham Project Intergroup Relations (research in progress) (This is a new project that involves several different projects, but the primary one is to construct a questionnaire assessing black, Latino, and white attitudes toward each other using Durham as the pilot study site. The sample will be drawn by Genysus, a sampling outfit that specializes in drawing minority samples. The plan is to construct the questionnaire during the fall 2001 semester, have it translated into Spanish, and once we have received approval from the IRB, to be in the field during Spring semester 2002. Although the data from Durham will be analyzed and will lead to publications, the overall goal is to use the pilot study as the foundation for a large grant proposal to either a private foundation or the National Science Foundation. At this point, six political science graduate students are involved in the project..).
