Jamie L. Brummitt is a Ph.D. Candidate in American Religion at Duke University. Jamie studies the media and materiality of nineteenth-century American Protestantism. She holds graduate minors in American Islam, and Art, Art History, & Visual Studies. Her advisor is David Morgan, author of Protestants and Pictures and The Embodied Eye.

Jamie’s dissertation “Protestant Relics” examines the  material culture of mourning that proliferated after George Washington’s death. Each dissertation chapter focuses on a collection of mourning objects: Washington relics, mourning embroideries, mourning quilts, mourning lithographs, hair relics, and post-mortem photographs.

Jamie finished coursework in Spring 2014, passed preliminary exams in May 2015, and successfully defended her dissertation prospectus in January 2016. Jamie plans to complete her dissertation research by May 2017 and defend her dissertation no later than May 2018.

She completed her Bachelor of Arts in May 2010 at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). She majored in Philosophy & Religion and Communication Studies, and minored in Spanish and Digital Arts. Jamie completed her Master of Arts in Religion at Duke University in 2012.

She enjoys reading Anne Rice novels on rainy days and and shopping for antiques with her  husband, Andrew Coates. Jamie and Andrew were married on October 17, 2015.
