Abstract: As the Jews have always produced art, the question arises, why is the notion of a Jewish Art so problematic? No effort is made in this paper to review or summarize the arguments for or against 'Jewish Art.' Rather, it attempts a modest shift in the terms of the debate. The essay addresses the question by considering the historiography of Jewish art in relation to both the End-of-Art debates and the Holocaust industry. This paper offers a provisional answer to the question: Why has Jewish art never managed to become Jewish Art? The End of Art debate conditions the discussion; the institutions of Jewish art provide its substance. © 2007 Brill.
