Abstract: American women continue to enter the clergy in growing numbers. Chaves argues that a religious denomination's policy on the ordination of women is better understood as a symbolic display of gender equality--or inequality--that as a policy either motivated by or intended to regulate the day-to-day reality of women inside the organization.
