Rafael Lopez-Barrantes, born in Madrid, was licensed as a lawyer before he left Spain to study extended vocal range techniques and performance with the Roy Hart Theatre in England and France. In 1986 he created his own company, Archipelago Theatre, in Paris. In 1990 he moved to the United States, where he co-founded Archipelago Theatre USA, and acted and directed in several of their productions. He has been a faculty member of the Theater Studies Department at Duke University and the American Dance Festival since 1992. He was Chairman of the Voice Department at the National School of Puppeteers in Charleville-Mezieres, France (1986-92) and since 1996 he has been the President of Celebrations, Inc., a corporation specializing in design for the events industry. In July 2002 he was appointed by the Spanish Government as the Honorary Consul of Spain in North Carolina. His research in Traditional Japanese Performing Arts and Flamenco singing has shaped extensively his approach to voice, body and theatre training.
