Dr. Payne is the author of Getting What We Ask For: The Ambiguity of Success and Failure in Urban Education, Debating the Civil Rights Movement, and the award-winning I've Got the Light of Freedom: The Organizing Tradition and the Mississippi Freedom Movement. His scholarly focus remains urban education and educational policy, the Civil Rights Movement, social change, and social inequality. With the help of a Senior Scholar Award from the Spencer Foundation, he is currently working on a book on what has been learned from the last decade of school reform.
