Abstract:
A simple model that predicts the effects of axial cracks on the elastic deformation of thin cylindrical shells has been developed. This model provides an efficient tool for performing parametric studies and for interpolating, extrapolating, and generalizing finite element analyses. The simple model described in this paper provides a useful tool for understanding the phenomena involved in the response of cracked shells and for identifying situations where unacceptably large deformations may result in the presence of cracks.
