Research Interests:

I'm a first year student with a background in Latin American and Caribbean history, plantation archaeology, and art history. Currently, I'm developing a project on the history of science and medicine in 18th century Mexico. I'm interested in how gender, sexuality, and race intersect with discursive and visual representations of disease and the body during this time. This project is informed by questions relating to the politics of knowledge and specifically the role of Nahua healers as intellectuals within the Hispanic Enlightenment. My recently completed MA thesis focuses on local understandings of race, religion, and power in the Mexican mining town of Zacatecas and the experiences of urban free blacks who lived there during the dawn of the 18th century.
