    We present two examples of micromechanical simulations and show how the calculations can be used to draw useful conclusions at the macroscopic leve. In bedload transport by water we examine the mixing depth of sediments undergoing shear traction. In transport of dry sand grains by wind we examine the development of periodic bedforms and the burial and preservation of bedding surfaces. © 1993.
