Abstract:
An earlier paper by the same authors examined the dynamic behavior of an impact-friction oscillator. It was shown that a variety of highly complex behavior was possible including chaos, and the results of numerical simulation were verified experimentally. Because friction is so common in mechanical applications and has a relatively profound effect on behavior, it is logical to consider whether friction forces can be used to advantage in such engineering systems. The Ott-Grebogi-Yorke (OGY) method is used here to control the impact oscillator using friction force as the control parameter.
