The performance of a lower-limb amputee and an upper-limb amputee, each equipped with an artificial sensory feedback system, was studied in two experiments. One experiment measured the open-loop responses of the amputees. The other experiment measured the closed-loop performance of the upper-limb amputee with a prosthesis. The open-loop responses were modeled with a two-block linear response function. The first block was a time delay and the second block was a first order low-pass filter. The use of feedback changed the upper-limb amputee's performance with a prosthesis. An overshoot was more pronounced when feedback was used. The open-loop response function model was modified and the resultant closed-loop model predicted an overshoot for the performance task with feedbackKeywords:
