In real-time multimedia streaming, some control mechanism to maintain the quality of service (QoS) in data transfer, which includes not only network-level QoS guarantee by resource reservation but also adaptive control by end hosts according to the network conditions is necessary. NEC has been developing a middleware that will provide a framework of these QoS control functions by using Internet standard protocols such as RSVP (resource reservation protocol), RTP (real-time transport protocol) and RTSP (real-time streaming protocol). This paper presents the architecture of the QoS middleware, QoS control mechanism and the implemented systemKeywords:
