A method was developed to control the sample reduction ratio of the fan algorithm by adjusting the error tolerance as the data are processed. The feedback to the adaptation process is a weighted average of the time between output samples. The algorithm was tested on 176 electrograms recorded at an input sample rate of 8 kHz with output target reductions of 8:1, 16:1, and 32:1. A comparison of mean tolerance and RMS error between the output of the adapting algorithm and the output of a fixed-tolerance fan that produced the same amount of data reduction showed little or no difference between the groupsKeywords:
