(last updated on 2007/04/16)Abstract:
The source-field concept is presented as it arises in potential-theoretic problems and in current-flow fields in particular. On the basis of this concept, primary sources, secondary sources, and equivalent sources can be identified. It is shown how the primary sources are related to spatial variations in transmembrane potential arising from excitation of individual cells. In addition, the effect from many cells is examined using either superposition or the replacement of discrete cells by a continuum. The effects of discontinuities in conductivity are taken into account through secondary sources. The definition and derivation of completely equivalent sources are presented. Keywords:
