    Abstract:
An important factor contributing to nuclear magnetic resonance imaging contrast is the relative enhancement of water proton spin relaxation via dipolar cross relaxation between protons of water and certain tissue macromolecules. Although this relaxation enhancement has long been recognized, the details of the cross-relaxation mechanism have not been well characterized. The authors specify macromolecular dynamic and surface chemistry factors affecting cross relaxation in aqueous solutions or dispersions of proteins, lipid bilayers and polymers
