    Abstract:
The appearance of new types of CTs represented by optical current transducer (OCT) solves the difficulties of saturation and low transient accuracy of traditional electromagnetic CTs used in protective relaying. According to the working principle and features of the OCT based on the Faraday magneto-optical effect and based on the seamless communication protocol in IEC 61850, a scheme to implement the interface between OCT and microprocessor based protection device by optical Ethernet is proposed. Through the comparison between the protective device adopting OCT and that adopting traditional electromagnetic CT, the conclusion that sensitivity and reliability of protective relaying can be remarkably improved by use of OCT is obtained.
