    Abstract:
    Shock and vibration isolation results naturally when the isolated object's natural period is much longer than the periods of excitation. Damping improves the isolation system's performance when the excitation period is close to the fundamental period of the isolated object, but reduces performance when the excitation period is much shorter than the fundamental period. In cases in which the excitation characteristics are uncertain, as in the case of earthquake-excited structures, damping may be controlled via sensor feedback in order to achieve good isolation performance across a wide range of excitation periods. To study the advantages and the drawbacks of the passive and semi-active control systems, numerical experiments of a sample model are performed. The main task of this study is to assess the reliability of these two methods, which provide vibration isolation for earthquake excited structures, and which represent advanced tools for protecting critical facilities against undesirable levels of shaking
