    Abstract:
An optimization model was used to identify least cost contact filtration designs of filtration rate and runtime as a function of raw water particle concentration and average diameter. The optimization model incorporates a previously developed simulation model for filter ripening as nonlinear, non-explicit constraints on terminal headloss and average filtrate quality. A simple solution algorithm for the optimization model is presented. Results of the optimizations show least cost contact filtration design to be highly sensitive to both the size and concentration of particles in the raw water.
