Abstract:
Drainage-extraction algorithms are applied to grided bathymetry of the US continental margin. The algorithms are shown to be extremely useful in mapping submarine canyons, deep-sea channels, and the areas of the sea floor these systems drain. Subjective parameters limit the accuracy of the information the algorithms derive from gridded bathymetry. However, as long as these limitations are known, there are a number of potential ways drainage extraction can be used to analyze gridded bathymetry. -Authors
