My dissertation, "Bodies of Evidence: Portraits of Post-Feminine Performance," uses the idea of Brechtian gestus to explore the performative aspects of documentary and portrait photography in relationship to three groups of non-normative female bodies (the female serial killer, the transgendered man, and the elderly, infirmed woman). My current book project, Over My Dead Body: Documentary Media and the Forensic Imagination, explores the intersections of individual trauma, public memory, and social activism through tracing the shared origins, divergent visual technologies, and narrative constructs of documentary and forensic media in their quest to represent the (w)hole Truth.
