   Title = {Medieval woman's song: Cross-cultural approaches},
   Pages = {1-279},
   Publisher = {Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania
             Press},
   Editor = {Klinck, AL and Rasmussen, AM},
   Year = {2015},
   Month = {January},
   ISBN = {9780812236248},
   Abstract = {The number of surviving medieval secular poems attributed to
             named female authors is small, some of the best known being
             those of the trobairitz the female troubadours of southern
             France. However, there is a large body of poetry that
             constructs a particular textual femininity through the use
             of the female voice. Some of these poems are by men and a
             few by women (including the trobairitz); many are anonymous,
             and often the gender of the poet is unresolvable. A "woman's
             song" in this sense can be defined as a female-voice poem on
             the subject of love, typically characterized by simple
             language, sexual candor, and apparent artlessness. The
             chapters in Medieval Woman's Song bring together scholars in
             a range of disciplines to examine how both men and women
             contributed to this art form. Without eschewing
             consideration of authorship, the collection deliberately
             overturns the long-standing scholarly practice of treating
             as separate and distinct entities female-voice lyrics
             composed by men and those composed by women. What is at
             stake here is less the voice of women themselves than its
             cultural and generic construction.},

   Abstract = {Offering five possible thematic pedagogical approaches to
             Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival (1200-1210), this article
             argues that the romance, often overlooked due to its
             complexity, is a rich and timely medieval work that will
             capture students' imaginations. We offer a practical guide
             for using the romance (or selected excerpts) to introduce
             students to current medieval studies approaches through its
             treatment of the Global Middle Ages, the medieval racial
             imagination, and the complexities of gender, and we explain
             how the social dynamics of Parzival's narrative
             world-building recommend its inclusion in courses with
             topics such as medievalism, speculative fiction, and

   Booktitle = {Literary Studies and the Pursuits of Reading},
   Year = {2010},

   Abstract = {The fifteenth-century Nuremberg carnival plays-short,
             skit-like, rhymed couplet texts written in German and
             largely treating secular themes-present new and rich
             opportunities to explore the nature and practice of reading
             in the late medieval world. Defining reading first as the
             visual processing and mental decoding of letters on a page
             allows this essay to glance briefly at some of the notions
             of reading implicit in the manuscript transmission itself,
             and to examine the motif of reading in the plays. We will
             see that while the motif of reading books and letters is not
             uncommon in medieval German literature from the 1200s on, it
             is virtually absent from the Nuremberg carnival plays, where
             it is alluded to only occasionally. That this should be so
             in a city enjoying high rates of literacy and renowned for
             its cultivation of literature leads us to further
             exploration of the plays based on a second definition of
             reading as interpretation broadly construed, in Dennis H.
             Green's formulation “the reading of signs where no actual
             writing is involved and where the reader is to pass from an
             external indicator to the concealed meaning. ” This
             expanded definition allows us to explore the ways in which
             the plays make their comic points by participating in and
             staging a broad and surprising spectrum of medieval
             interpretive practices: personification; medical diagnosis;
             character diagnosis using four humors theory; mental
             arithmetic Kopfrechnen and, finally, imaginative or
             performative visualization, a technique widely discussed in
             connection with medieval religious and devotional practice
             but less well studied in the realm of secular, comic
             literature.},
