   Title = {Points of View: Gramsci and “the Question of the
             Novel”},
   Journal = {Italian Culture},
   Volume = {40},

   Month = {January},
   url = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/01614622.2022.2060491},
   Abstract = {Perhaps the most essential device for the organization of
             the novel form is narrative point of view. Mikhail Bakhtin,
             in “Discourse in the Novel” (1934–1935), maintains in
             fact that “every language in the novel is a point of view,
             a socio-ideological conceptual system of real social groups
             and their embodied representatives. … Any point of view on
             the world fundamental to the novel must be a concrete,
             socially embodied point of view, not an abstract, purely
             semantic position.” György Lukács, too, having
             discovered the particular Standpunkt of the proletariat in
             History and Class Consciousness of 1923, would define the
             novel—for instance The Historical Novel in 1938—as the
             “conscious and consistent application of … specifically
             historical viewpoints.” On closer inspection, Antonio
             Gramsci, only a few years earlier, had touched on similar
             theoretical issues in a (somewhat cryptic) observation on
             the Italian novelistic tradition: “the ‘point of view’
             of the key cannot be that of the lock.” This observation
             in turn opened the way to a veritable taxonomy of various
             ways of representing “the people” in the Italian novel -
             from Manzoni’s “paternalism” to Dostoevsky’s
             “con-science.”.},

   Abstract = {Expelled from Spain in 1779, the Jesuit Juan Andrés moved
             to Parma in Italy, and published a seven-volume history of
             nothing less than the literatures of the whole world - 'Of
             the Origins and Progress of all Literatures'. Andrés
             attempted to found literary historiography as a critical
             method opposed to the Francocentrism of classicist
             aesthetics. If French classicism had labeled southern
             literatures (Spanish and Italian) as unreasonable and
             unworthy of entering modern Europe's republic of letters,
             historicism was the conviction that every civilization and
             every period has its own possibilities of aesthetic
             perfection. In so doing, Andrés was pitting a method of
             critical historiography against Montesquieu's and the
             philosophers' own philosophy of history. Copyright © 2006

   Abstract = {World War II is over. Italy is radically transformed with
             new modes of production and consumption, of thinking and
             dreaming, of living the present, remembering the past, and
             projecting the future. Here is the end of an 'old' archaic
             Italy, and the beginning of a 'modern' one, which rethinks
             its own national identity on the basis of its 'Atlantic'
             collocation and Marshallized economy - but also as
             resistance to an 'Americanization' of its culture. An
             emblematic episode in this reconstruction of Italy is the
             discussion, opened by the Gubbio Papers in the early 1960s,
             on the 'management' of Italy's artistic 'patrimony'. The
             restoration of Italy's historic centers, aimed at avoiding
             American urban sprawl and the culture of US neo-capitalism,
             engenders, however, new and more peculiar problems - last
             but not the least the 'museumification' of both Italy's
             culture and its past. This article frames the Gubbio
             'solution' within the larger contemporary debate concerning
             the models of economic and cultural development that should
             be deployed in Italy's 'reconstruction'. © 2003 Taylor &
             Francis Ltd.},
