Abstract = {The 1970s was a decade of "subversives". Faced with various
progressive and revolutionary social movements, the forces
of order-politicians, law enforcement, journalists, and
             conservative intellectuals-saw subversives everywhere. From
indigenous peasant armies and gay liberation organizations,
to anti-nuclear activists and Black liberation militants,
subversives challenged authority, laid siege to the
established order, and undermined time-honored ways of life.
Every corner of the left was fertile ground for subversive
elements, which the forces of order had to root out and
destroy-a project they pursued with zeal and
             brutality.},

Title = {A dialogue with Michael Hardt on revolution, joy, and
             learning to let go},
   Journal = {Educational Philosophy and Theory},
   Volume = {54},
   Number = {7},
   Pages = {892-905},
   Year = {2022},
   Month = {January},

Abstract = {In this wide-ranging conversation, Michael Hardt reflects on
recent transformations within Empire. Several unique themes
emerge concerning power and pedagogy as they intersect with
subjectivity and global crisis. Drawing on the common in
conjunction with the tradition of love in education uncovers
a different path that attends to today’s real political,
ecological, and social needs. Finally, a focus on
collectivity points to a possible strategy—collective
             intellectuality—for educators to revise traditional
notions of leadership to encourage more ethical, democratic,
and sustainable futures. Yet, what this looks like in
practice remains for us to imagine.},

Abstract = {We want to ask, rather, what is the operative notion of the
common today, in the midst of postmodernity, the information
revolution, and the consequent transformations of the mode
of production. It seems to us, in fact, that today we
participate in a more radical and profound commonality than
has ever been experienced in the history of capitalism. The
fact is that we participate in a productive world made up of
communication and social networks, interactive services, and
common languages. Our economic and social reality is defined
less by the material objects that are made and consumed than
by co-produced services and relationships. Producing
             increasingly means constructing cooperation and
communicative commonalities. © 2010 Association for

Abstract = {Warren Montag’s Louis Althusser is a wonderfully clear
introduction to Althusser’s thought that demonstrates in
particular how his work continues to be useful for literary
studies. Montag’s most original contribution is that he
demonstrates that artistic production is at the center of
Althusser’s thought. The emerging hegemony of immaterial
labor and the significance of immaterial forms of property
combine to make Althusser’s thought newly relevant. ©

   Volume = {68},

Abstract = {Since the 1960s ecumenical dialogues have endeavoured to
formulate common statements concerning marriage. The aim has
been to develop a unifying pastoral understanding of
matrimony. Reviewing the different dialogues it becomes
apparent that the churches do not share a common position
concerning the exegesis of the relevant biblical texts.
Moreover, this accounts for why there is a variety of
practices concerning the acceptance of a second marriage and
its liturgical blessing. A significant dividing line still
exists between the theological commitment to the
indissolubility of marriage and contemporary practice, which
seems to revoke this principle due to the pressing needs of
our time. For the present debate within the Roman Catholic
Church concerning the status of remarried divorced couples,
the key issue will be whether the administration of the
sacraments is considered in the context of reward and
punishment or whether the Eucharist is regarded as a means
of mercy and consolation for the brokenness of
             life.},

nuclear arsenals continue undiminished, the social movements
and intellectual arguments opposing them have virtually
dis-appeared. This essay argues that in order to mount an

understand clearly the principle roles they play, which are
primarily political and economic: to support ever more
tenuous claims to sovereign power and to bolster the
functioning of capital. If we want to con-test the nuclear
regimes effectively, we will need to find ways to attack

and Saree Makdisi engage a Romanticism that goes beyond its
traditional identification with nationalism and bourgeois
individualism. Using the concept of the multitude as an
entry point, the ensuing conversation touches on non-Western
Romanticisms, the failures of nationalist ideology, radical
collective forms, Spinoza's imagination, and anti-capitalist
aesthetics as traces of an alternative Romanticism. These
traces open out towards largely undertheorized affinities
and tensions between Romanticism and the work of Marx,

Abstract = {I read Denise Ferreira da Silva’s Unpayable Debt as an
experiment that adopts “the wounded captive body in the
scene of subjugation” as an epistemological standpoint.
This situates her project in line with a tradition of
standpoint theories that adopt, for instance, the
proletarian or the feminist standpoint in similar ways.
These standpoints grant us not only a superior knowledge of
the current social order, highlighting its hierarchies, but
also provide a political ground for seeking to abolish the
structures of domination. Ferreira da Silva’s argument
diverges, however, in that her standpoint does not present a
subject to be affirmed, as do the other theories, but rather
one that must also be abolished. In this sense, I interpret
the aim of da Silva’s book to be a double
             abolition.},

Abstract = {This essay reflects on the concept of the common as both
natural good and human product. The common, in other words,
refers to the land, water, and air as well as to language,
knowledges, ideas, images, and affects. The primary argument
is that capitalist production is increasingly reliant on and
oriented toward the production of the common and yet the
common is destroyed (and its productivity reduced) when
transformed into either private or public property. The task
is to institute free access and circulation of the common.

Abstract = {This contribution is the first part of a debate between
Michael Hardt/Toni Negri and David Harvey on the occasion of
Marx’s bicentenary. The discussion focuses on the question
of what capitalism looks like today and how it can best be
challenged. This contribution asks: In what type of
capitalist society are we living today? And what is the
Marxian praxis that we need to challenge it? First, this
paper analyses capitalism in respect to the extraction of
value from the common, immaterial labour, digitisation,
automation, and finance capital. The greatest abstraction in
the productive process of value, in its implementation of
languages, codes, immaterial articulations of being
together, cooperation, affective elements, and so forth
presents also in the multitude the virtuality of an
extraordinary potential of resistance and autonomy from
capital. Second, the paper discusses what forms of praxis
are needed today. Marxian ontology is constituted and always
renewed by class struggle, by the material antagonism that
distributes the elements of real being and by the continuous
excess of value that living labour expresses. Today, we
discuss Marxian praxis in a society where intelligence is
put to work at the centre of the productive process. Here
emerges with great force the theme of the liberation of
humans from work, on the basis of the transformations of
work. Marx demonstrates how much cognitive and intellectual
activity is central to production, and how much fixed
capital is mixed with cognitive labour. In this context, the
notion of the appropriation of fixed capital is of key
             importance for class struggles.},

Abstract = {Abandon me! Incarnation is all about abandonment -
abandonment to the flesh. Paul writes that in becoming flesh
Christ abandoned the form of God; he emptied himself by
taking on a limited materiality. This self-emptying is the
exposure of the flesh. It is a kind of slavery that appeared
to Paul in prison as liberation. What exactly did Christ
abandon when he emptied himself? Certainly he did not
abandon divinity as such; rather, he emptied the
transcendental form and carried divinity into the material.
From one perspective this abandoned being might seem
precarious, foundationless, cast over the abyss, but really
this abandonment testifies instead to the fullness of the
surfaces of being. The self-emptying or kenosis of Christ,
the evacuation of the transcendental, is the affirmation of
the plenitude of the material, the fullness of the
             flesh.},

introduction to Althusser's thought that demonstrates in
particular how his work continues to be useful for literary

Althusser's thought. The emerging hegemony of immaterial

Abstract = {For most people, the most important economic activity is the
one they are engaged in. For lawyers and accountants it is
corporate consulting, for volunteers and activists it is the
third sector, for nurses and doctors it is healthcare, for
politicians and public officers it is the public sector. So,
for economics scholars, the most important economic activity
is their own trade: academic economics. This is precisely
what this volume is about. The economics of economics Given
the importance of academic economics for economists, it's
not surprising that the topic has been studied and debated
for quite some time now. Already in the 1970s, economists
were employing the tools of economic analysis to investigate
their own discipline (e.g. Siegfried 1971; Berg 1971; Hansen
and Weisbrod 1972; Lovell 1973; Stigler and Friedland 1975,
1979). However, these early investigations, and those of the
following two decades, are best regarded as case studies in
             the broader field of the economics of science (Stephan 1996;
Mirowski and Sent 2002; Diamond 2008), whereas the full
awareness of the existence of a distinct subject that could
legitimately be called the economics of economics is a
fairly recent business, dating from around the end of the
             1990s (Colander 1989; Hands 1994; Maki 1999).},

Abstract = {Michel Foucault was born in Poitiers and studied at the
Ecole Normale Superieure, where Louis Althusser was one of
his teachers. Foucault’s joined binary concept would seem
to remind of Marx’s post-Hegelian theory of the cultural
superstructure determined by the interests of the material
infrastructure. In a sense, all of Foucault’s books deal
with what he came to call the carceral archipelago, by which
expression he put a poetic touch on the harsh states of
exception political biopower imposes on those over whom the
State exercises dominion. The key word that ties Michael
Hardt and Antonio Negri back to Foucault by way of Deleuze
and Guattari is “vital,” which is to say that here, life

Abstract = {Toni negri's political history reads like a Hollywood movie
script: A dazzling roller-coaster ride of spectacular
successes and defeats, of subversion, false accusations,
intrigue, imprisonment, flight, exile. Negri is perhaps
unique among contemporary political theorists in the depth
of his own practical involvement in political militancy and
in the effort to recast his theorizing continually to keep
step with the innovations and evolutions of social
practices. In the early 1960s Negri became involved in the
worker struggles that were flourishing in the factories of
northern Italy. Negri participated actively in a group
called Potere Operaio that focused its activity on the large
factories in northern Italy, particularly the FIAT plant in
Turin. In the 1970s, Negri and others developed the concept
of "self-valorization," taken from Marx's Grundrisse, as a
complement to the refusal of work, or rather, as a means of
characterizing the affirmation inherent in the
             refusal.},
