Unpayable Debt calls for a reader who will assemble its sequence of moments and texts into an accounting of the debt that Western epistemologies, disciplines, and habits of reading owe to the people and cultures subjected to the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and to the dispossession and genocide of indigenous peoples. Fiction, distinct from history and the other disciplines that use the written word, proves essential to calculate that liability, and Ferreira da Silva exercises its inventive power in her scholarly critique as much as in videos, performances, and social practice collaborations.}, Doi = {10.1177/09213740231206093}, Key = {fds373485} } @article{fds355206, Author = {Gabara, E and Adey, I}, Title = {The Bermuda Triangle of Madrid’s Museums: The Prado, the Museum of the Americas and the National Museum of Anthropology}, Journal = {Art in Translation}, Volume = {12}, Number = {2}, Pages = {128-149}, Year = {2020}, Month = {January}, url = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/17561310.2020.1831747}, Abstract = {The Bermuda triangle of the title refers to the magical space between three Madrid museums— El Prado, the Museum of the Americas, and the National Museum of Anthropology—in which the coloniality of Spanish society disappears, in the contemporary moment as much as in the historical narrative. This article asks: where is Latin America— specifically, Latin American art—in Spain? It sets out the discursive maneuvers that have obscured that coloniality in art and in the daily activities that allow Spaniards to enjoy Andean potatoes in their tortillas and Mayan chocolate with their churros, without savoring the American bitterness that is their basic ingredient.}, Doi = {10.1080/17561310.2020.1831747}, Key = {fds355206} } @article{fds314210, Author = {Gabara, EL}, Title = {“Crossing the Border: Whether Real or Imagined.”}, Journal = {What It Means to Be American}, Publisher = {Smithsonian Institute/ Zócalo Public Square}, Year = {2015}, Month = {May}, url = {http://www.whatitmeanstobeamerican.org/discussions/movies-most-memorable-mexican-american-moments/#esther-gabara}, Key = {fds314210} } @article{fds297868, Author = {Gabara, E}, Title = {Fictions of emancipation: Collaborations with and against the law}, Journal = {English Language Notes}, Volume = {51}, Number = {1}, Pages = {173-181}, Year = {2013}, Month = {Summer}, url = {http://hdl.handle.net/10161/10378 Duke open access}, Abstract = {The topic of emancipation has garnered a great deal of attention recently, from Jacques Ranciere’s work, now widely read by scholars, artists, and activists, to new edited collections in my field of Latin American thought, published in Spanish and English. As present and necessary as this concept is, I propose that it is so because it contains within it some of the most difficult double binds faced by the intersection of art and politics. The bind of emancipation becomes evident in contrast to its supposed synonym (according to most thesauruses) of “enfranchisement.” The latter consistently signifies the liberation of the subject: his/her freedom from confinement and admission into the rights of citizenship. Emancipation, in contrast, is a fraught process, which ultimately does not guarantee the rights of all, and at times imperils the rights of very specific subjects. Nonetheless, I argue that it is worth delving deeper into emancipation’s perils, as they reveal compelling forms of fiction that connect performance to court, and art to law.}, Doi = {10.1215/00138282-51.1.173}, Key = {fds297868} } @article{fds297872, Author = {Gabara, EL}, Title = {El triángulo museológico de las Bermudas: El Prado, el Museo de América y el Museo Nacional de Antropología}, Journal = {Revista SUR/versión.
