- Congratulations to Joe Grieco, Chris Gelpi, and Camber Warren A slightly late congratulations to our friends Joe Grieco, Chris Gelpi, and Camber Warren for their paper in the April 2009 International Organization. The link to the abstract.... This paper is many of the things that makes our program a success. A long-term collaborative effort between two very productive faculty members, in one of the top journals in the discipline. And it also involves work with one of our best graduate students. Further, it is a really interesting and well-executed paper with important policy implications.
- Ralph Bunche Summer Institute renewed for three years The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $404,000 to Duke
University to continue the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute for the next three
summers, beginning this year.
The institute encourages highly competitive minorities to pursue graduate
programs in political science.
"I am pleased that the National Science Foundation remains impressed with
the work we are doing here at Duke," said Paula McClain, a political
science professor and the institute's director. "Bunche is considered a
cross-directorate program of the Division of the Social, Behavioral and
Economic Sciences, which means the proposal is reviewed twice by two
different panels and both reviews were stellar."
The five-week summer program is designed to simulate the academically
intensive graduate school experience as well as provide mentoring for
African-American, Hispanic and American Indian students. The program's
top students are given the opportunity to present their research at the
American Political Science Association's annual meeting.
"The success of the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute is unmatched by any
other pipeline program in the country," McClain said. "For example, six
former Bunche students will receive their doctorates this spring and will
move into faculty positions in the fall. There are another 25 that are
writing their dissertations, and numerous others in graduate programs
around the country."
Sponsored by the American Political Science Association (APSA), the
institute is funded by the National Science Foundation and Duke. The
institute, named in honor of the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize winner and first
black American to receive a doctorate in political science in 1934, moved
to Duke in 2000 from the University of Virginia when McClain joined the
Duke faculty.

- Alexander Downes' new book
In this book, Downes asks why states engage in civilian victimization -- military strategies that target an enemy's civilian population in wartime. He argues that such strategies are employed in two circumstances: to coerce an adversary to give up when leaders become desperate to win or to reduce their military casualties in costly wars of attrition, and to eliminate actual or potential resistance by the population in wars to conquer and annex an enemy's territory. http://www.duke.edu/~downes/publications.htm
Congratulations Alex!
