    Abstract:
It is widely recognized that remarkable changes in Chinese family structure have accompanied changes in the rate of marriage, fertility, and mortality in recent decades. Life expectancy of China's population increased from 47 years in 1950 to 67.9 years in 1981 - 66.4 years for males, 69-4 years for females. This article reports the findings of a simulation study of how changing demographic factors affect family size and family types. First presents a brief review of the cross-sectional evidence on the changes in Chinese family structure. A non-technical account of the simulation model is given in the second section. Presentation of the simulation results and discussion of the lessons are the topics of the remaining sections.-from Author
