Abstract: Born in rural, segregated central Florida, I was lucky enough to go to a liberal arts college and to begin to see the connections between oppressive state action and the misery of citizens. I developed an attachment to directional, rather than destinationist, policy advocacy, and became active as a “big L” candidate for the Libertarian Party, most significantly running for Governor of North Carolina in 2008, and being involved in televised debates with the “real” candidates. The result is that I have concluded that a strong presumption in favor of liberty, and against planning and central direction, should be the default starting point for policy debates.
