    Abstract:
The theory that large laser beam amplification resulting from the coherent driving of the atomic dipole moment is discussed. The coherent driving is expected even when the effects of the atomic recoil are ignored. The amplification occurs over a similar spectral region where large atomic recoil induced gain is predicted. The experiments of Hemmer and Lippi are discussed in light of a possible complex interplay between collective atomic recoil effects.
