Alyssa Granacki, Postdoctoral Associate

Alyssa is a Postdoctoral Associate, teaching courses on medieval Italian literature and gender studies. Her research interests include Dante, Boccaccio, feminist thought, and women writers. She is currently working on a book manuscript, Feminism Before Feminism: Boccaccio After Beauvoir. The book places feminist thinkers such as Simone de Beauvoir, Judith Butler, Adriana Cavarero, and Audre Lorde in conversation with Boccaccio and other early modern writers, showing how the early modern world produced theories of gender that can shed light on the central questions that concern feminists still today. 

Alyssa has received grants from the Mellon foundation as well as from the Graduate School and the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Duke. She also served as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in southern Italy and was a visiting scholar at the Università di Bologna (Dipartimento di Storia, Culture, Civiltà) in 2018.
