Jacques Pierre, Lecturing Fellow

Jacques Pierre was born in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. He studied Haitian Creole and French Applied Linguistics at the State University of Haiti. He is currently a Lecturing Fellow in French, Haitian Creole, and Culture in the Department of Romance Studies at Duke University, co-director, Haiti Lab, and Core Affiliated Faculty at the Center for the Latin and Caribbean Studies. He has been coordinating DukeEngage in Miami for three years. Before joining Duke University, he was a Visiting Lecturer in Haitian Creole and Culture at Florida International University (2009-2010). In addition, he coordinated the Haitian Summer Institute at Florida International University for three years (2007-2009), and was a Teaching Assistant for Haitian Creole at Haitian Summer Institute at Florida International University (2005-2007). He was trained as a lexicographer at Indiana University and worked for six years as an Assistant Editor on the Haitian Creole-English Bilingual Dictionary (2007) published by the Creole Institute at Indiana University. He has an M.A. in Translation Studies with a concentration in French and Haitian Creole and an M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language, both degrees from Kent State University. His research interests are: “The basilectal vs the acrolectal forms of Haitian Creole in Haitian Movies,” “The coexistence of French and Haitian Creole in Haitian movies,” and “Literary Translation in the context of a Less Translated Language.” Most recently, he published two books of poems in Haitian Creole, Omega (2012) & Kite Kè M Pale (2016), and co-edited Une saison en enfer/Yon sezon matchyavèl (2010) & the Haitian Creole version of The Last Mapou (2019)/Dènye Pye Mapou a.
