Teddy Romeyn

Teddy Romeyn is a second-year PhD student in Romance Studies on the Spanish track. He researches the long 19th-century, nation-building and revolution in Latin America with a transatlantic focus on the Caribbean, Mexico and Spain. His interests are in cultural studies and representations of race, colonialism and national identity formation. Teddy's current research project analyzes written and visual portrayals of the Haitian Revolution in New Spain in the early 19th-century.

Prior to studying at Duke, Teddy received a BA with High Honors in Hispanic Studies, Summa Cum Laude from Dartmouth College in 2017, and an MA in Spanish with a specialization in literature from Middlebury College in 2024. His undergraduate thesis analyzed 20th-century Argentine literature and social change. He lived, studied and worked in Buenos Aires, Argentina for three semesters over the course of his undergraduate and early graduate career. After college, Teddy was an English instructor in Madrid, Spain (2017-2018) and a Spanish teacher, advisor and cross-country and rowing coach at Phillips Academy Andover (2018-2020) and the Brunswick School (2020-2024). He has taught all levels of Spanish from beginner to Advanced Placement (AP) and has advised and created student organizations to connect students with Hispanic people both locally and globally.
