Monty Montgomery,

Monty Montgomery

Please note: Monty has left the "History" group at Duke University; some info here might not be up to date.

John Michael Montgomery is a first-year doctoral student studying modern Latin America. He holds an MA in Latin American Studies from Indiana University, a BA in International Studies from Franklin College (IN) and also studied at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso. Monty is interested in counter/sub/popular-culture and political resistance in Chile in the aftermath of the Pinochet regime. His MA research focused on how barras bravas, organized fútbol fan groups written off by state and media elites as nothing more than violent hooligans, have emerged as politically-minded challengers of the neoliberal status quo. Broadly, his work lies at the crossroads of antifascist barrismo, student organizing, and music across the South American continent.
