| Nora Williams,![]() I am a fourth-year PhD candidate in the Department of History at Duke. I also am pursuing a graduate certificate in the Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies Department. My research explores the nineteenth century U.S. South spanning Antebellum slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction era. Broadly, I am interested in studying issues of gender, race, class, sexuality, and violence in the nineteenth century U.S. Specifically, my dissertation explores women's experiences of sexual violation through a spatial analysis. I seek to uncover how trauma becomes a "spatial haunting" that lingers within the spaces where violence occurred and is not solely confined to the bodily experience of trauma.
