  1. Inbari, M, THE ORIGINS AND EVOLUTION OF ḤAREDI ANTI-ZIONISM, in Routledge Handbook on Zionism (January, 2024), pp. 195-209 [doi]

    Abstract:
This chapter traces the origin and evolution of ultra-Orthodox opposition to Zionism and the State of Israel. It shows that anti-Zionism must be understood in light of the fierce ultra-Orthodox struggle against modernity. The roots of this movement are in Hungary. This subculture strengthened during the interwar period with the leadership of Rabbi Chaim Elazar Shapira, the Munkacser Rebbe. In 1946, Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum, himself a Holocaust survivor from Hungary, immigrated to Williamsburg, New York, and reestablished the Satmar Hasidic Movement. Teitelbaum authored Sefer YeYoel Moshe, an influential anti-Zionist manifesto. In the State of Israel, the strongest opponents of Zionism came from the Haredi ranks in Jerusalem, the followers of HaEdah HaCharedit and Neturei Karta.
